I want to publish my book, but most publishers are asking for editable PDF of my book in advance. How should I ensure that my content won’t be plagiarized?

There are several categories of book publishers but for this reply I will deal with self-publishing companies and professional publishers. If you are talking about self-publishers for free, t would be asking for your fully-formatted PDF file ready for publishing or if you need help with the latter, there is a fee involved. If you elected to contact a professional publisher directly, by-passing the agent (not the norm) and get a reply directly from them, there must have been something in your cover letter and/or a segment of your book that attracted their attention to request what I assume would be a full version of your work in PDF format. Had you contacted an agent, that middle person would have asked for a segment of the book and should be interested enough to continue the qualification and requirements process, including submission of the entire PDF file and suggested editing. If the agent found merit in the work, only then the “right” publisher will be contacted by the agent. And then the publisher may or may not have an interest. As mentioned in other replies (regardless of the agency of publisher you select), a PDF file would be required for your protection and for other reasons. There are many books in the market with ample details on the procedures to follow for each category of book publishers.
